Maria Halphen
DIRECTOR
Maria Halphen is originally from Sweden and an international collaborator on stigma research. She was inspired by the harrowing experiences of Susie Hincks, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. As a result of further discussions with the wider mental health community, Maria gained valuable insights into the issues faced by those living with mental illness. Maria decided to devote her time and energy to create a foundation for encouraging and coordinating research at an international level and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness through communication and education. Maria is also the President of the Philippe and Maria Halphen Foundation, which is under the auspices of the French Academy of Science in Paris, France.

CONSULTANT
I am honored to be a part of Meeting for Minds, an organization that resonates deeply with my personal journey and professional mission. My life has been shaped by both challenges and opportunities, giving me a profound understanding of the importance of mental health support and open dialogue.
I grew up in a family that, while wealthy, lacked the security and love every child needs. My parents struggled with alcoholism, and our household was, in many ways, a textbook example of the impact such circumstances can have on a family. As a response to this instability, I developed Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which became a major challenge, particularly during my teenage years.
However, I was fortunate to have incredible friends—both at home and in school—who supported me with kindness and understanding. Their presence played a crucial role in my well-being. Additionally, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Bertil Söderling, a remarkable doctor who saw beyond the illness. He recognized the child behind the symptoms and helped me find ways to relax and navigate my challenges. After 7 years the symptoms were all gone.
These experiences profoundly shaped my perspective on life. My personal struggles heightened my awareness of others’ difficulties, fostering deep empathy and a drive to contribute to positive change. At the same time, I realized the importance of having safe spaces for open conversation—something that was missing in my youth but has thankfully evolved over time.
Today, through Meeting for Minds, I see meaningful change happening, and I am incredibly grateful to be part of it. The opportunity to contribute, share insights, and witness the impact of collective support is invaluable to me.
Beyond my work in mental health advocacy, I am a radio and television producer, travel manager, and conference planner. Interestingly, I see my past struggles as a gift—they have made me more attuned to the needs of others, both in my personal life and professional endeavors. Understanding people, creating meaningful connections, and ensuring smooth, well-organized experiences are at the heart of what I do.
Ultimately, my journey has taught me that even the most difficult experiences can lead to growth, awareness, and the ability to help others. I look forward to continuing this work with Meeting for Minds and beyond.
